FOBKenya stands for Friends of Basketball Kenya. Its a brain child of Peter Kiganya and his desire to give back to a game
that has opened a lot of doors for him. Also as a tribute to Coach Tony Mauldin who gave a lot of Kenyan basketball players a chance
to pursue basketball dreams in the USA, Kiganya being one of them.
FOBkenya is a non-profit and non-governmental organization that focuses on molding the youth into model citizens through various bsketball
programs and at the same time nurturing their talent and responding to some of the youths needs such as education and mentoring. The Organization
was founded in May 2006 and at present some of its beneficiaries have been the Outsidaz basketball team and Harry's youth program.
FOBKenya was founded after Outsidaz coach Lamek Dalla invited South America based basketball player Peter Kiganya to attend a
training session at the Kimathi court. It was a sight to see. The team practiced at the end of a road where practice had to be stopped
every now and then to let cars and people through and only had one rim. Despite all this, the team had high morale and the only thing the
team wished for was a basketball which did not need to be aired up every three minutes or so as was the case with the ones they had.
Kiganya later invited a former KCITI basketball player, Jacqueline Atieno, who is based in the USA to attend various training
sessions at the Kimathi courts coincidentally where she to began her basketball career. After watching the practice sessions at
Kimathi she felt that something had to be done.
With help from Jacqueline Atieno, Lamek Dalla, Emily Ongoro, and Steve Adilla, Peter Kiganya was able to make
a dream – giving back to the game, a reality in forming FOBKenya. Its mission is to help the youth make smart
choices for life through basketball mentoring programs.
Its current officials are Peter Kiganya, Jacqueline Atieno, Lamek Dalla, Emily Ongoro and Steve Adilla.
